Fola is nominated in the Headies’ newcomer category. He’s also nominated for Album of the Year. That double billing is the clearest sign of how fast Catharsis, his debut album, has moved. He won Best Newcomer at AFRIMMA in Dallas this month. He heads to the Headies in Toronto with 10 nominations, more than any other artist, Channels TV reported.
The nominations cover almost every part of the ballot. Catharsis is up for Album of the Year and Best R&B Album. “You” competes for Song of the Year, Afrobeats Single of the Year, Best Recording and Viewers’ Choice. He’s also in Best Male Artiste, Digital Artiste of the Year and Next Rated. The British Blacklist adds two more. One is Writer of the Year. The other is Best Headies Collaboration, for “Lost” with Kizz Daniel.
Industry watchers will notice Writer of the Year first. It rewards the pen, not the performance or the streams, so Fola’s case rests on the writing too. That’s also where the money is shifting. Nigeria‘s first copyright levy payout sent ₦1.2 billion to songwriters, producers and artists this year.
The company he keeps is strong. Vanguard‘s published list puts Catharsis alongside Qing Madi’s I Am the Blueprint and Tems’ Love Is a Kingdom. Tay Iwar’s Reflection Station and Tiwa Savage’s This One Is Personal are there too. For a debut, that’s a demanding field. It shows how deep Nigerian R&B and Afrobeats run right now.
Dallas was the warm-up. His Best Newcomer win came on a night dominated by Nigerian acts, Channels TV reported. Davido took Album of the Year, and Tems won Best Female West Africa. Channels TV has framed Fola’s Headies haul as a sign of a new generation shaping Africa’s global sound.
Toronto will be harder. Davido and Omah Lay’s “With You” is also up for Song of the Year and Best Recording. Wizkid’s Morayo and his Asake collaborations are in the running too.
