The industry was bracing for a November shutdown. However, the script has flipped. Organisers officially announced the AFRIMA 2026 rescheduled dates. Consequently, they moved the continent’s most prestigious music gathering from November 2025 to January 7–11, 2026. Lagos, the beating heart of Afrobeats, retains its hosting duties. Furthermore, the timing suggests a strategic pivot. It aims to maximise the star power in the city.
A Strategic Shift to January
Organisers did not make the decision to move the 9th edition in isolation. After consulting with stakeholders, they opted for the new year to ensure a “world-class experience.” The official line cites broader participation. Nevertheless, the move is a logistical masterstroke. AFRIMA positions the awards in early January. Thus, they capitalise on the diaspora and global talent already in Lagos for the festive season. Effectively, this extends the “Detty December” calendar into a week-long cultural summit.

The Week-Long Itinerary
The revised schedule promises a comprehensive celebration of the African soundscape. Festivities kick off on Wednesday, January 7. Specifically, the Welcome Soirée and Diamond Showcase will highlight emerging talent. Then, the agenda moves to the Africa Music Business Summit (AMBS) and a Music Icons’ Night on the 8th. Subsequently, the fan-favourite AFRIMA Music Village follows on the 9th.
Finally, the event culminates on Sunday, January 11. The live awards ceremony takes place at the Eko Convention Centre. Heavyweights like Burna Boy, Davido, and Ayra Starr lead the nominations. Therefore, the postponement ensures the focus remains squarely on the artistry. It avoids the clutter of the crowded Q4 release window. Stakeholders have spoken, and the consensus is clear. If we celebrate African excellence, we do it on our own time. Moreover, we must do it properly.
